Kejriwal Slams Gujarat Government Over Rise in Illicit Liquor, Drug Abuse and Failing Governance

Arvind Kejriwal criticises the Gujarat government over rising illicit liquor and drug abuse, alleging policy failures despite decades of BJP and Congress leadership. Speaking in Ahmedabad, he demands stronger law-and-order measures and highlights political tensions after an attack on AAP leader Gopal Italia.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal sharply criticised the Gujarat government on Monday, alleging that decades of political continuity under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress had failed to deliver meaningful change in the state. Speaking in Ahmedabad, Kejriwal said that despite the BJP replacing its entire cabinet in recent years, the administration had “still not been able to set the state in order.”

Kejriwal expressed particular concern over the growing circulation of illicit liquor and the rise in drug abuse, arguing that these issues were costing lives while law enforcement continued to target vulnerable groups. He alleged that “fake alcohol is being sold openly across the state,” contributing to recurring tragedies, even as “children of farmers are being thrown into jail.”

The AAP chief further claimed that whenever his party exposes what he called the shortcomings of the ruling BJP, the Congress reacts defensively. Referring to the recent attack on AAP leader Gopal Italia, Kejriwal said the opposition party appeared more troubled by AAP’s criticism of government policies than by the issues affecting citizens.

He urged the Gujarat administration to adopt firm measures to strengthen law and order, protect public safety and ensure accountability in cases related to illegal liquor and narcotics. According to Kejriwal, safeguarding residents must be the government’s foremost responsibility.

Kejriwal’s remarks add fresh political friction to Gujarat’s already charged landscape, underscoring growing concerns over substance abuse and the effectiveness of existing governance structures. As parties intensify their rhetoric ahead of upcoming political cycles, the state’s handling of illicit trade and public safety is likely to remain a central point of contention.
